Ovarian Cancer Survivors committed to making a difference. Ovarian and
Gynecological Cancer Survivors are making an enormous impact in the lives
of others. Survivors are speaking to 2nd & 3rd year medical students at
Stony Brook University Hospital's Health Sciences Center. Striving to
increase the awareness of the symptoms of ovarian cancer and Gynecological
cancers by sharing their personal stories.
Betty Reiser is a founding member of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance
in Washington, DC. An ovarian cancer survivor for more than 30 years,
Ms. Reiser created the ovarian cancer program run by SHARE in New York
City and has established an extensive network for patients and families,
as well as a hot line, educational programs and support groups. She has
been a tireless worker in advocacy for increased ovarian cancer research
and funding, and she has also served as a Department of Defense peer reviewer.
Ms. Reiser serves a vital role in the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance's
"Survivors Teaching Students" program, which uses ovarian cancer survivor
stories to educate medical students about ovarian cancer so that they
will be better equipped as physicians to diagnose and detect the disease.
Betty Reiser trained 5 Ovarian Cancer Survivors to speak with medical
students at Stony Brook University Hospital. The program is so well received,
a vital and valuable tool in educating medical students of the signs &
symptoms of Gynecologic Cancers. Behind each survivors face is a poignant
story which will inevitably hold the key to early diagnosis and saving
lives.
Ms. Reiser passed the torch on to one of the original trainees and ovarian
cancer survivor. Marylou Stewart is now the lead facilitator of the "Survivors
Teaching Students" program presently being taught at Stony Brook University
Hospital. Marylou Stewart along with Survivor Cathy Newman is training
and coordinating with the school and recruiting other survivors to participate
in the ongoing and highly praised program.
Marylou Stewart Said; " We are the first to group in the country to get
into the NP program in the School of Nursing. Our debut is 11am March
6th, at Stony Brook. It's exciting that we are reaching so many more.
